Myrtle Beach wasn’t always a well-developed city catering to millions of tourists, but you probably knew that of course. However, you might not have guessed that it stayed a remote area for quite some time. Did you know that Myrtle Beach is also in fact a man-made island? When you explore the city’s history, you are going to run into all kinds of interesting stories, including those of families who settled here originally.
One family well known in Myrtle Beach today and dating back to early development of the Grand Strand and its vacation properties is the Ammons family. They own property all over Myrtle Beach, and the cornerstone of their holdings is the Sea Mist Oceanfront Resort. That’s where I live. Myrtle Beach was slammed hard by Hurricane Hugo a few decades ago, and that is when The Pavilion became a piece of the city’s history, as it is no longer standing. The hurricane wreaked havoc on the area, and even just last year, we had one run along the coast and do some damage, including uprooting most of the beach grass that took years and years to grow.
If you are looking at the arts as you study the history of the Myrtle Beach area, a good place to visit is Brookgreen Gardens. It is also in general one of the more popular attractions. Of course, there are all kinds of historical attractions to visit, and then there is golf.
Myrtle Beach has taken its place over the years as a major city for golf vacations. One of the main reasons why is the sheer number of courses in the city. Celebrities design courses in Myrtle Beach, and golfers come from all over the US and the world. As you get to know the city, you are going to run into all kinds of other unique aspects of its history, too.
There is a lot of military history in the city. Myrtle Beach now hosts millions of tourists annually, and high rises are all up and down the coastline. Remember that North Myrtle Beach is a separate city, so once you know everything there is to know about Myrtle Beach, it’s time to look at the entire Grand Strand. You’re talking Georgetown, Murrell’s Inlet, Pawleys Island, Surfside and all kinds of great spots to explore.
